“Ahhhhhh the holidays! What should be ‘The most wonderful time of the year’ can often be a season of stress, anxiety, and unmet expectations. And you don't have to have an anxiety disorder to feel like you are tangled in knots when facing the holiday to-do list! We have to decorate, buy the gifts and wrap them, do the food preparation and baking, host or attend holiday parties, take the perfect Christmas picture and send out the cards, welcome family, or travel. Let's face it, it can be challenging for anyone. We can, however, take some simple steps to mitigate the challenges we face in December. First and foremost, we must give ourselves the grace to put perfectionism aside and strive for balance and self-care. When we free ourselves from self-imposed demands we can be present for the things that truly matter. You need to sleep, take breaks, stick to a budget, say no to things you don't want to do, and establish boundaries with friends and family. Implementing meditation, and practicing mindfulness and gratitude have been shown to reduce anxiety and elevate mood. Stay present, plan ahead, reach out to loved ones and remember, it's ok to ask for help! Your holiday twinkle may have some wrinkles but, if we strive toward wellness and embrace peace, hope and love we become the gift others want to receive.”
